Where Are They Now? Ashton212’s Summer Interns

Posted 4 years 69 days ago by Sheila Ellian Lewis

In July of last year, we blogged about The Proper Care and Feeding of Interns. We are using that blog as a guide to maximizing the experience of this year’s summer intern, Matt Adams. And, we want to give you an update on the success our former interns are experiencing in their new jobs!

Meet Matt Adams

This Fall, Matt will be a senior at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois where he will complete his BA in Business/Economics with a minor in Communications. Matt spent much of his life pursuing a professional golf career. Living and attending high school in Hilton Head, SC, Matt was coached by Hank Haney, who you may know as the swing coach for Tiger Woods. At Wheaton, Matt is a member of the Varsity Golf Team and a part of the first nationally ranked golf team in the school’s history. In 2012, Matt was the Naperville Intercollegiate Tournament Champion; and in both 2011 and 2012, he was a CCIW Academic all-Conference selection. Last summer, Matt traveled to Turkey, Greece, Italy and Scotland on a study abroad program

Marketing and advertising have also been a passion of Matt's as he watched his Dad, Jon Adams (President of Adams + Taylor, a northern California marketing services firm and Ashton212 Associate firm), build a strong, reputable business. In the summer of 2012 Matt interned with Echo Marketing in San Francisco. This summer, he works under the leadership of Joel Bailey, our Recruitment & Business Development Consultant. Matt's projects include recruiting new consultants/associates, gaining competitive insights to feed our business development strategies, and developing our Ashton Volunteer Program where we are committed to giving one day of volunteer time each month to up to 2 Oakland-based nonprofit organizations.

We are delighted to have Matt working with us. He helps us remember when we were trying to figure our lives out and also reminds us that we'll be in good hands when he, and others his age, enters the workforce!

Catching up with Sarah Nash, Summer 2012 Intern

Sarah is now an Associate in the Global Communications Practice at Heidrick & Struggles, an executive search firm. Working out of the New York City office, her team works across industries placing Chief Communications Officers and their teams. Sarah conducts the initial market research to find what is happening in the market with a specific position as well as the first group of potential candidates. She then phone screens the first round and presents recommendations to the Partner leading the search.

We then interview the candidates we agree upon in-person or by video, and present our recommendations to the client, usually through a weekly conference call update. Sarah keep in touch with candidates as they move to being interviewed by clients, and hopefully getting hired!

Catching up with Queen Denchukwu, Summer 2013 Intern

Queen is now a University Recruiting Coordinator at Autodesk. Her key responsibility is driving the Autodesk intern hiring process by assisting hiring managers, recruiters and candidates through the hiring process—specifically posting jobs, scheduling interview, organizing travel, and preparing offer letters. Her goal is to ensure that each candidate has a top-notch experience that is well organized, efficient, welcoming, and respectful.

Queen also works on several exciting projects including assisting in new intern orientation and the Autodesk intern project showcase.

Catching up with Bernita Dillard, Summer 2013 Intern

Bernita now works as the Surety Coordinator/  Communications Manager for Merriwether & Williams Insurance Services, headquartered in San Francisco, California. She recently graduated from Mills College with a Master's in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Communication and Social Media.

In her role, Bernita co-manages the company's internal communications projects, manages the social media team, and is helping to develop and implement a company-wide communications plan.  She also manages the firm’s interns … now that makes a lot of sense from our perspective!

Bernita has prior experience in the mortgage industry and has a deep passion for community economic development and inclusion.  She is excited about learning the surety industry and helping her company to improve its internal and external communications.
