Posted 3 years 175 days ago by Gretchen Hirsch

Ashton212 CEO Sheila Lewis will serve as emcee for two events to be held in December 2014.

Sutter-Health Women’s Health Conference

The 4th annual Women’s Health Conference sponsored in part by Mills-Peninsula Health Services, a member of the Sutter Health family, will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront. Started in 1995 as a Sunday breast cancer awareness-raising program has now grown into an annual event attracting more than 500 women of all ages. The event starts at 7:30 AM and provides information on health, safety, and financial sustainability.

This year, attendees will select from 17 morning and afternoon breakout sessions including:

  • Manejo de Diabetes (Diabetes 101) – offered in Spanish
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy and Menopause
  • Ask the Pharmacist
  • Skin Deep and the Technique
  • DIY (Do It Yourself) Spa Products
  • How to Handle the Stressors of Relationships and Life
  • Women’s Self Defense

The event is co-hosted by the African American Community Health Advisory (AACHAC), the community outreach organization for Mills-Peninsula. Their vision is to eliminate health disparities through innovative models of health education and services across the generations and diverse communities. As such, they look to each of their events for indicators of health improvement in participants. Gloria Brown, co-founder of AACHAC, says of the Women’s Health Conference, “Every year we are encouraged by the outcomes reported by conference attendees. For example, a sampling of 2012 participants showed a 10 percent increase in women reporting greater consumption of fruits and vegetables, and a 15 percent increase in daily physical activity of at least 30 minutes.

Notable speakers have included the late Dr. Maya Angelou and Beverly Johnson, the first African American supermodel who is also an actress, author, and AIDs activist. This year’s afternoon keynote speaker is writer, journalist, and former Editor-in-Chief of Essence Magazine, Susan L. Taylor. Morning keynote speakers are Dr. Brenda B. Spriggs and Dr. Glenda F. Newell, authors of Focus on YOUR BEST HEALTH: Smart Guide to the Health Care You Deserve. A special treat for attendees is a lunchtime fashion show with cancer survivors as models. It’s a heartwarming and empowering moment!

Tickets are $55 each and registrations are being taken online.

Passport to College’s Inaugural Benefit Gala

On Saturday, December 13 the Passport to College’s Inaugural Benefit Gala will be held in Oakland, California. The goal of Passport to College is to identify international students who have demonstrated achievement and interest in science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM), yet lack adequate resources to pursue their goals. These academically outstanding students selected by Passport to College, earn full-tuition scholarships from select colleges and universities. However, they often fall short of funds for books, housing and food. That’s where Passport for College steps in.

Having already experienced success in achieving their goal, the organization is hosting its first fundraiser from 5-9 PM at the Piedmont Avenue School, 4314 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. Dr. Marcus Lorenzo Penn, Founder and CEO, Self Care Reform Health & Wellness Consultancy, will keynote the event. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online. If you’re unable to attend, please consider making a tax deductable donation toward the good work of this organization.
