Sheila to Keynote Urban Solutions’ Enterprising Women! Graduation Celebration

Posted 2 years 57 days ago by Lorraine Lewis

Ashton212’s CEO, Sheila Lewis, has been tapped to provide words of encouragement and support to nearly 2 dozen graduates of San Francisco-based Urban Solutions’ Enterprising Women! Program on July 29, 2016. This six-month training program covers topics including assessing business and personal capacity, developing strategic growth and action plans, dealing with the social and emotional aspects of money, building negotiation skills  and achieving life-work balance.  After the six-month training, Enterprising Women! program participants receive year-round small business technical assistance and mentorship opportunities.  Additional program elements include social responsibility and professional networking.

Women of color and those from low-income backgrounds learn from successful entrepreneurs and others with specific areas of expertise relevant to the success of owning and running a business. Many of these women see owning their own business as an opportunity to support themselves and their children and create a legacy of economic independence.

The San Francisco Business Times recently reported that businesses owned by African Americans are growing at a higher rate than U.S. businesses overall. African American women are leading this increase owning 58.9 percent of all black-owned businesses in the U.S. With 1.5 million businesses in the U.S. owned by African American women, training and access to capital have never been more important. Helen Branham, Founder of Enterprising Women! and Director of Small Business Services says, “Urban Solutions Enterprising Women! fills a void by embracing an often ignored, yet critically important, demographic.”

Since starting her first company in 1997, Sheila has informally provided small business owners strategic business advice, marketing consultation and support. Sheila notes, “Starting and growing a business challenges every bit of who you are. It’s easy to second-guess yourself along the way and feel alone. It’s so important to surround yourself with people who believe in you and who can provide counsel and referrals to others who can positively influence your professional and business growth. Serving as the keynote speaker for this organization makes me proud to be an entrepreneur.”

For more information about serving as a mentor, or sponsoring the program, contact Helen Branham  at (415) 553-4433 x202 or Lorraine Lewis. The Enterprising Women! program has received generous support from the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development, Supervisor London Breed, and Wells Fargo, among others.
