Aimee Allison, Founder Of She The People, Is Onto Something Big!

Posted 351 days ago by Sheila Ellian Lewis

She the People is a national network connecting women of color to transform our democracy. The vision of Aimee Allison, She the People is one of the big reasons that so many women of color rose to great heights during the November mid-terms. I’m convinced that 2018ꟷthe year of women of color in politicsꟷis the first of many where we will take on the role of key political influencers and continue to shake things up across the United States.

I had the good fortune of facilitating a panel at the launch of Fund Her on November 8, 2017, in San Francisco. Frustrated by the 2016 election, Valerie McGinty, founded the organization to power progressive women to lead California. Aimee Allison was on that panel, speaking as the President of Democracy in Color. I recall how passionately Aimee expressed her perspective, how clear her commentary and how compelling her words.

In March 2018, Aimee founded She the People and kicked off a national conversation with the inaugural She the People Summit just 6 months later in San Francisco. The historic summit featured the nation’s most exciting progressive women of color leaders on the ballot, championing movements, and driving winning political strategy.

November results indicate that Aimee is definitely onto something critically important to our democracy and has furthered her influence as a political strategist. This month, she was named to the POLITICO Power List: 19 to Watch in 2019. Aimee recently shared, “What a year, with many victories and the promise that women of color will continue to powerfully shape our political future.”

I am a member of the Executive Advisory Board of How Women Lead in San Francisco. How Women Lead is a champion for promoting diverse women’s voices and propelling her leadership forward. How Women Lead brings together influential women in an inclusive and highly supportive community to provide a platform for thought leadership, to collaborate, and to share resources and stories.

On January 12, 2019, our organization will hold our Annual Spotlight Awards for Women Leading Social Justice, Philanthropy and Film. Aimee will receive our Setting the Scene Pacesetter Award. Other awardees include Congresswoman-Elect Ilhan Omar, receiving the Si Se Puede Award, and Norah Shapiro, receiving the Changing the Narrative Award. The importance of these awards is best expressed by our CEO, Julie Castro Abrams, who said, “This year's Spotlight Awards celebrate women leading in propelling women of color into the center of our hearts and minds as new leaders in our democracy. How Women Lead is not only committed to raising and empowering diverse voices but is also committed to true and reflective representation.”

Please join us on January 12 at 5:00 PM at the Merchants Exchange Club in San Francisco to honor these courageous leaders reshaping the landscape for women and girls. Sponsor the event and/or purchase tickets here.

Thank you, Aimee, for recognizing the incredible power of women of color! Because of you, She the People has inspired, encouraged and supported women of color in leading this country toward its intended future.
