Improve Documentation Data Flow Process

A large financial services company with a national footprint. Worked as a Business Process Consultant.


The project goal was to lead a team of analysts to create documentation of their data flow processes to ensure readability, clarity, and consistency of messages. The target audience of the documentation was auditors and regulators.


Reading and interpreting the policy led full understanding of the current state. Using the content provided, the narrative was broken down into logical components of who, what, when, where and why. A template was created and provided to analysts asking them to provide content along a string of defined data points.


The initial reaction was one of relief as the template made it easier for analysts to complete the information. They then applied the same process to other, similar documentation for which they were responsible. This new documentation methodology became the new standard for the entire department and was identified as a “best in class” process by one of their regulators.
