African American Community Health Services | Spreading the Story of Successful Community Outreach and Management

AACHAC LogoAfrican American Community Health Advisory Committee (AACHAC), the community outreach program of Mills-Peninsula Health Services , a Sutter Health Facility.

One of the AACHAC’s signature events, Soul Stroll for Health, a weekend-long series of events, had increased in visibility both locally and nationally. Since inception, Saturday Soul Stroll walkers, who complete a 1-, 3- or 5-mile walk, increased in number in number from 500 to more than 3,000 since 2001. Interest in replicating this success in communities across the United States prompted the AACHAC to create a Soul Stroll for Health How-To Guide. The guide was designed to describe the event in detail such that readers could implement a similar program in their communities, scaled to meet local interest.

We created a 12-page, 4-color How-To Guide that provided detailed step for several critical execution areas for a successful event. These included a tips on how to organize an event committee, planning timeline, budget estimates, fundraising/advertising/public relations, venue selection, insurance, a day-of-event timeline and more.

The guide was placed on the organization’s website for easy download and distributed via PDF to interested parties on an as needed basis. This eliminated the need for printing the document, thereby controlling cost. To-date 6 Soul Stroll events have been held in new locations in California, Wisconsin and Arizona. In total, AACHAC Soul Stroll event have touched more than 25,000 walkers, strollers, rollers and runners.
